Lake Union Floating Home
Seattle is home to some interesting homes including a large number of floating homes and houseboats. Unfortunately, there are many challenges to working on these unique homes, and very few businesses will even attempt it.
The Problem
PRP was contacted to update and preserve this floating home by repainting and re-staining it’s heavily exposed wooden surfaces. The task of stripping, sanding, staining, and painting modern architectural surfaces is difficult to begin with. Doing so on a floating home where access is tricky and protecting the environment is of the utmost importance can make for a challenging production process.
The Solution
We ordered a mobile dock to tie up alongside to provide our team with safe, stable access to the exterior walls. This platform also helped us to prevent dust, debris, paint, and stain from having any contact with Lake Union. We then replaced cupping and failing siding boards on the most weathered south side before we stripped and stained the natural surfaces with a semi-transparent stain and a solid body stain on the remaining surfaces.
